East's diamond's failed a suit quality test and the subsequent bidding wasn't free of peril.<br><br>
South's penalty double, perhaps out of fashion given Support Doubles, hadn't sufficient appeal for North.

West began with a predictable and successful singleton diamond lead and a ruff ensued.

A club return was won with dummy's <img src=./images/c.gif>A.
<br>The <img src=./images/h.gif>K and <img src=./images/h.gif>A were too separate rounds of trump drawings.<br><br>
With no outstanding trump to pull, South imagined perhaps a 14th card of that suit in this hand and cashed another one.
<br>Many declarers might have instead simply discarded a club and ruffed a club in dummy (winning in total 5 hearts, 1 club, 1 club ruff, 2 diamonds and 1 spade).
<br><br>
Necessity is the mother of invention and South without club ruff recourse decided East had <img src=./images/c.gif>K and ducked a club to watch it fall, making game "the hard way".<br>
A slightly better line would have been advancing <img src=./images/c.gif>T and playing small from dummy regardless of West action, in case East indeed had still guarded <img src=./images/c.gif>K and perhaps lazy West having <img src=./images/c.gif>J and not covering.<br><br>Somehow the previous paragraph seems ridiculous, something like naming the type of chainsaw "The Butcher" used in the horror flick where everyone ended up dead.
