Four Card Overcall Variance
|
Rotated to South declarer: originally board: 8
Most would try 1N over the East 1
opening.
South's philosophy was that at matchpoint scoring, getting in lead directing
overcalls and suggesting early a suit in which to compete was somehow preferable
to a standard show of 15 to 17 balanced...real balanced...as balanced as they
come.
North might have been surprised by the 2N bid, depending on the range
of 1
.
It was a makeshift partnership of necessity.
Two top clubs started the defence. A third round was won in hand and a heart
from dummy discarded.
It looked as if success would boil down to which defender, East or West, would
have the
Q.
Declarer started trumps, East winning the
A and exiting
another.
Declarer cleared trumps ending in hand.
Cashed were the
AK and a heart was ruffed.
East had followed to two spades, three hearts and at least three clubs.
East had to have had longer clubs than diamonds for the club opener, hence
at least four and perhaps five.
If having five clubs, then West could not have the
J,
already all three having been exposed in play. East then of high cards had
shown
A
J
AKJ
amounting to 13 points. East had to have at least two diamonds and perhaps
three.
A theoretical East balanced hand including additionally the
Q
would have amounted to 15. If additionally the
Q had
been held, East would have had 17.
In either event, East would have strongly tended towards opening 1N.
Some players with 17 points and a five card suit will tend towards a planned
rebid of 2N.
What were those clubs spots by deduction for East?" wondered East. Good
enough for such a upgrade?
"Excuse me...can you tell me your partner's tendencies for rebidding
2N in 5 card minor openings?"
"Uh...right...sure...um...tendencies."
"Unlikely then" concluded declarer aloud, the evidence pointing
towards West strongly.
