 Picking A Slam

South's 3N bid in this forcing auction assumed a number of things:
-that East would have 3 card support for West, East would have 6 cards for the preempt and North would consequently have a void
-that North didn't have 4 spades, given not negatively doubling the 2 bid
-that North holding 5+ diamonds might have been more likely to cuebid with 3
-that opposite a North with 10+ cards in the minor suits then, other bids might be more encouraging of a slam or grand slam opposite the South minimum and virtually wasted

West started with the K and switched to a spade.
Declarer tried dummy's Q, East ducked and South won the A.
Eventually South returned to dummy to allow East to win the K to promote a dummy spade to in total collect 6 clubs, 2 diamonds, 2 spades and 1 heart: down 1.

Assuming 3 creates a forcing auction, what choices did South have in place of bidding so encouraging a 3N when 6 was best?
