Wolfe Relay (3) and Checkback Stayman (3)

These two series of bids/responses assume a rebid of 2NT after a response of 1/1 to a 1/1/1 opener.

Opener has denied 4 card support for partner's major, but may still have 3 card support or 4 of the other major.
The range for the 2NT rebid is usually 18-19 HCP, with no singleton/void and no more than 2 doubletons.

1 Pass 1 Pass
2NT Pass 3* Pass
3** Pass 3 Pass
Pass Pass Pass

If responder has a weak hand (less than 7 HCP), he can use the Wolff relay (3). Opener is obliged to bid 3 which responder can Pass, or repeat the original response (which must then be passed by opener).

If responder has more than 6HCP, he can use Checkback Stayman (3) if holding 5 of the bid major and/or 4 of the other major.
         Opener rebids:

  • 3 to show 3 card support
  • 3 to show 4 card suit
  • 3NT denies both of the above
  • Opener LHO Responder RHO
    1 Pass 1 Pass
    2NT Pass 3* Pass
    3/3 Pass 4

Any bid by responder, other than 3NT or 4 of the agreed suit, after a support showing bid by opener, is a slam interested cuebid.

Responder's rebid of original suit after a negative response shows a long suit that was interested in slam.

As is the case with any bid that forces a relay, responder can use the fact that 3 is forcing to define other artificial auctions.

Bids after what should have been a Wolfe sign-off may be reassigned as slam tries:
